Yuvraj Singh out of Australia ODIs

Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the one-day tri-series to be played in Australia following the ongoing Test series

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jan-2012Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the one-day tri-series to be played in Australia following the ongoing Test series. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that he is yet to fully recover from the non-malignant lung tumour that has kept him out of the team since the home ODIs against West Indies. He has been training at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, and while his condition is better since the time the tumour was discovered, he does not want to rush back into cricket until his recovery is complete.Yuvraj hasn’t played ODIs since his Player-of-the-Tournament performance in the World Cup. An injury kept him out of the tour of the West Indies, though, and his contribution to India’s tour of England was cut short by a finger injury sustained during the Nottingham Test. He returned for the home Tests against West Indies, and was left out of the side for the third Test, in November. He asked the BCCI to not consider him for selection for the home ODIs against West Indies because he wanted time to regain fitness. He was not considered for the Test series in Australia, which India currently trails 2-0.Yuvraj said he had been troubled by bouts of coughing and vomiting since the World Cup but had ignored the problem during the tournament, “assuming it was due to stress”. Subsequent tests revealed “a golf-ball sized” growth on his left lung. He went through several rounds of medical procedures in order to ascertain the exact nature of the tumour, which was eventually found to be non-malignant. Yuvraj had been targetting a comeback in the tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, which kicks off on February 5, but is now unlikely to make a comeback until the Asia Cup in March.

Rain prevents play after Hampshire bat

Nottinghamshire were denied the opportunity to take advantage of Hampshire’s poor four-day form after heavy rain washed out day one at the Rose Bowl

ScorecardNottinghamshire were denied the opportunity to take advantage of Hampshire’s poor four-day form after heavy rain washed out day one of the Championship Division One clash at the Rose Bowl.Nottinghamshire, currently sixth in the table with three wins from nine games, were unable to get on the field after steady rain began in earnest just after 11am.The start of play had already been pushed back to 11.30am to allow the ground to recover from Hampshire’s one-day game with Durham the evening before, but the weather stepped in to further delay proceedings.Umpires Nigel Llong and John Steele made numerous trips to the middle throughout the day in a bid to get the game under way, but after a final inspection at 5pm, the persistent drizzle around the ground forced them to abandon play for the day.The sides did announce their teams, however, with Hampshire – still searching for their first win in the Championship this season – without influential skipper Dominic Cork due to an illness in his family and deciding to bat first. Fellow former England quick bowler Kabir Ali was also rested for the hosts, with Chris Wood and David Griffiths drafted in.Nottinghamshire made three changes, bringing in one-cap England seamer Darren Pattinson, Charlie Shreck and spinner Graeme White. Stuart Broad could yet figure if he is left out of England’s XI for the Test Match with India at Lord’s.

Ganguly's last chance in dead rubber

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors in Delhi

The Preview by Dustin Silgardo20-May-2011Match detailsSaturday, May 21, Delhi
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Robin Uthappa has not lived up to his billing•AFPBig pictureIt’s the first dead rubber of the IPL. Somehow, for six weeks the tournament has managed to not have a single match completely devoid of meaning. Even the eternal optimist will find it hard to squeeze an ounce of significance out of Saturday’s match between Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors though. There are a couple of individual players to watch. It may be the last glimpse of Sourav Ganguly as a cricketer, Robin Uthappa will be keen for one big performance to step up his bid for an India place and Varun Aaron won’t mind another opportunity to showcase his pace. For most though, it’s the kind of game they’ll want to end as soon as possible. There hasn’t been a match at the Kotla since May 2, so it’s difficult to know what to expect from the pitch. In a way, the match is almost an advertisement for a two-tier system in which the bottom two sides are relegated. As the IPL group stage peters out to a dull end, the English football premier league will see its relegation battle go down to the last day with five sides fighting for safety. An introduction of a similar system in the IPL will create interest in the tournament for the struggling teams till the end.Form guide (most recent first)Delhi: LLLWL (tenth in points table)
Pune: LLWWL(ninth in points table)Team talkAaron Finch has gone back to Melbourne after hurting his shoulder, so won’t get the chance to improve his dismal IPL numbers. Both sides may as well give opportunities to their fringe players. Colin Ingram and Andrew McDonald have not been given enough of a chance for Delhi, while 18-year-old Unmukt Chand was given two games at the start of the tournament and was then dropped.Kamran Khan, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Mohnish Mishra have all disappointed for Pune, but may get another chance now that nothing is at stake.Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector. In the spotlightCurious Australian eyes will be on Callum Ferguson who has been starved of opportunities and runs so far. He could run into quite a few fellow Australians in the Delhi team. After a forgettable season, it’s Irfan Pathan’s last chance to prove his doubters wrong. His $1.9mn auction price has been a weight around his neck, and perhaps with the campaign drawing to a close he will be able to play more freely.Prime numbersDelhi have actually amassed the second-highest number of runs this IPL season; their 2031 is second to Kings XI Punjab’s 2108. However, the number of runs they’ve given way, 2073, is far more than any other team.
Pune’s Mithun Manhas has the most ducks in IPL 2011 – fourThe chatter”We hope to make it to the semis. We have started on the next season. We are into a review process. We will bounce back strongly next year and things will change for us next season.”
“If you see he has taken around 17 [16] wickets in the tournament so far. We are also working on his batting and fielding; he is a bright candidate for one-dayers in the near future.”

Spurs: Kilpatrick drops Tielemans update

Dan Kilpatrick has dropped an update on the reported Tottenham Hotspur interest in Youri Tielemans.

What’s the word?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Evening Standard journalist confirmed that, following reports of Arsenal’s interest in signing the Leicester City midfielder this summer, Antonio Conte’s side are also monitoring the situation of the 25-year-old ahead of a potential swoop at the end of the current campaign.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

After quote-tweeting Simon Collings stating Arsenal’s interest in a move for the Belgium international, Kilpatrick added: “Also being monitored by Spurs.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering how impressive Tielemans has been for Leicester following his £40m move to the King Power back in 2019, the confirmation that Fabio Paratici is plotting a move for the playmaker this summer is sure to have left the Tottenham Hotspur faithful buzzing.

Indeed, despite the Foxes’ struggles in the league this season, the £49.5m-rated talent has been one of Brendan Rodgers’ few shining lights over his 29 Premier League outings, scoring six goals, registering three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots, making 1.2 key passes and completing 0.8 dribbles per game.

The £120k-per-week midfielder has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.7 interceptions, 2.1 tackles, 43.3 passes and winning 4.7 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the 49-time capped international average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Leicester’s second-best performer in the English top flight.

As such, with it being reported that a new central midfielder is one of Conte’s priorities in the summer transfer window, when taking into account Tielemans’ proven Premier League ability coupled with his extremely reasonable £25m asking price, Paratici simply must make a move to beat Arsenal to the signing of the Belgian sensation ahead of Spurs’ 2022/23 campaign.

Man Utd: Roy Keane praises Anthony Elanga

Manchester United legend Roy Keane singled out Anthony Elanga for praise during the Red Devils’ 3-0 Premier League victory over Brentford.

The lowdown: Much-needed positivity

The Red Devils ended their 2021/22 home campaign on a high as Ralf Rangnick’s side ran out comfortable winners at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in the first half before a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty was followed by Raphael Varane’s first goal for the club to cap a much-improved display.

Sitting in the studio watching an important night on and off the field, United legend Keane was impressed by one bright spark in particular…

The latest: Keane praise for Elanga

Speaking at half-time during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football [via Manchester Evening News], the midfielder who made 471 appearances for the club was full of praise for Elanga after the 20-year-old provided the assist for the first goal.

Keane gushed: “Just the movement from Elanga, he’s very positive. Very good movement, but poor defending.

“That’s what you want from young players. You got to mix your game up, when to go short, when to spin. It’s a good ball from Dalot.

“Right into the area and Fernandes, very simple but very effective. Lovely ball (from Elanga). He’s definitely got a bright future. Everything he does, on the pitch, is always positive.”

The verdict: Green shoots

Elanga has certainly been a rare beacon of positivity from what has been an otherwise dismal season for the red half of Manchester.

Predominantly operating as a right winger, the twice-capped Sweden international has created three big chances, completed 0.6 dribbles and taken 1.1 shots per game on average in the Premier League (Sofascore).

Overall, Elanga has scored three times and provided two assists in 25 appearances across all competitions and seems almost certain to play a major part in Erik ten Hag’s impending rebuild.

Everton transfer news on Calvert-Lewin

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has reportedly now told his friends that he would like to leave Everton in the summer, with Arsenal being his preferred destination.

The Lowdown: Big interest

It has been reported that both the Gunners and Newcastle United have now made enquiries over the possibility of signing Calvert-Lewin this summer, who is almost certain to leave Goodison Park if they are relegated from the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

His season has been plagued by injuries, but the striker has shown his credentials in previous campaigns on Merseyside (one of the best‘ in his position.

The Latest: Arsenal preferred

As per Football Insider, a recruitment source has revealed that Calvert-Lewin is now ‘likely’ to leave the Toffees in the summer, whether they end up getting relegated or not.

He has ‘told friends’ that he would prefer to move to Arsenal over Newcastle, implying that he would be happy to move on from the Blues.

The Verdict: Sell

Given that Calvert-Lewin is seemingly unhappy at EFC with his willingness to move, added on top of his injury problems, the summer may now be the best time for the board to cash in.

An England international at 25 years of age, the former Sheffield United ace should still command a big fee in today’s market, regardless of whether the club end up relegated.

Calvert-Lewin would not be easy to replace, but with the likes of Richarlison still in the squad, they could then use that money to strengthen in other areas of the pitch.

Stoneman ton gives Durham the edge

Durham batsman Mark Stoneman enjoyed another red-letter day against Sussex togive his side a measure of control on the first day of the CountyChampionship Division One match at Hove

31-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Durham batsman Mark Stoneman enjoyed another red-letter day against Sussex togive his side a measure of control on the first day of the CountyChampionship Division One match at Hove. The left-hander has now scored two of his three first-class hundreds againstSussex after making his debut against the county in 2007. He was out six overs before the close for a career-best 128 from 254 balls with 19 fours and a six as Durham closed on 360 for nine, with Callum Thorp unbeaten on 33.It was often hard going for the 24-year-old, who came in in the sixth overafter Michael Di Venuto was caught behind trying to force off the back foot togive James Anyon the first of three wickets. Stoneman had reached 49 at lunch but after completing his half-century in the first over of the afternoon he concentrated on watchful defence, particularly against Monty Panesar, and only added 14 runs in the next 100 minutes while 73 were being added at the other end.He broke free from the shackles briefly by taking 11 when Amjad Khan returnedto the attack and then tucked into the new ball with three boundaries in a rowoff Wayne Parnell and another eight runs in the next over from Khan beforecompleting his hundred with a boundary off Parnell, the 15th of his innings. It was no surprise that Durham opted to bat first on a slowish pitch but theydid not really impose themselves until a fourth-wicket stand either side of teabetween Stoneman and Benkenstein who added 99 in 30 overs, Benkensteincontributing 64 off 99 deliveries with 10 fours. The partnership ended unnecessarily when Stoneman dabbed the ball into theoff-side and set off for a high-risk single. Benkenstein’s momentary hesistationcost him as Murray Goodwin returned the ball accurately with the batsman wellshort of his ground. It was a much-needed breakthrough for Sussex, who struck again two balls laterwhen Ian Blackwell top-edged a sweep to square leg to give off-spinner ChrisNash only his fourth Championship wicket of the season. Anyon, the pick of Sussex’s seam attack, returned with the new ball to have Phil Mustard caught behind and Scott Borthwick taken low down by Luke Wells for a duck four balls later.Stoneman apart, none of the Durham top order had gone on after making decentstarts. Opener Will Smith was well held by the diving Matt Prior at second slip as theEngland wicketkeeper returned to domestic duty to play only his fourthChampionship game of the summer. Paul Collingwood found the boundary twice off the first 33 balls he faced by hitting Anyon through the offside for successive fours. The former England player also pulled Parnell for six but the South Africanleft-armer had his revenge when Collingwood played back and edged to first skip, where skipper Michael Yardy held a juggling catch.

Opening my primary job – Watson

Shane Watson has reiterated his desire to stay at the top of the order for Australia but said that if he has to bowl more overs for the team he may need to be played in a different role

Daniel Brettig in Colombo 13-Sep-2011Shane Watson has reiterated his desire to stay at the top of the order for Australia but said that if he has to bowl more overs for the team he may need to be played in a different role.Watson has managed a highest score of just 36 during Australia’s ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, but as a bowler has had a significant influence. He took three middle-order wickets in the first innings in Galle, which tilted the match decisively towards Australia, then offered excellent support to Trent Copeland and Ryan Harris as they sought to spoil the hosts’ efforts to save the Pallekele Test on the final day. This takes a toll on Watson’s batting, but he said he must find a way to better balance the two roles.”It’s easy to say that [my bowling is affecting my batting], but really in the end I’m in the team as an opening batsman; my primary job is to score runs and I’ve just got to get better at it,” Watson said. “There’s no doubt being an allrounder and bowling does take a lot more out of you than guys who just bat, but that’s part of being an allrounder.”I really do enjoy opening the batting and taking on the quicks with the new ball, but it does depend on what my role is. If the new dynamics of the team require me to bowl more, as I did in this [the Pallekele] Test match, then my role may change and I’m happy to bat anywhere to make sure we’ve got the best people in the right positions. I feel my body is really coping and handling the overs a lot better as well.”Watson enters the final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo without the runs he believes his batting touch has warranted. In something of a microcosm of Watson’s Test batting career, first-innings scores of 22 and 36 gave Australia a start, but were not the match-shaping tallies he and the team crave.A career ledger of two Test centuries, against 15 half-centuries, rather sums up his present state of frustration, despite spending plenty of time in this year’s Indian Premier League at the feet of Rahul Dravid, who he quizzed in some detail about the art of concentration.”It’s been disappointing,” Watson said of his batting performances in Sri Lanka. “After not playing Test cricket over the last seven or eight months I’ve been really excited about getting into the Test cricket side of things, the batting especially. I’m hitting the ball alright. Hopefully I can turn that into a big score.”That’s the most frustrating thing, not being able to capitalise when I’m batting really well. I know within the team I’m a more senior player now so it is my job as a top-order batsman to be able to score big runs, and unfortunately I haven’t been able to do that consistently. It’s something I’ve got to get better at.”

Sehwag reaffirms support for the UDRS

India opener Virender Sehwag has reaffirmed his support for the Umpire Decision Review System, asking for its implementation in all of India’s engagements leading upto, and including the World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Oct-2010India opener Virender Sehwag has reaffirmed his support for the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), asking for its implementation in all of India’s engagements leading upto, and including the World Cup.”I am a big fan of the UDRS,” Sehwag said. “I want it to be there for the India-New Zealand series, India-South Africa series and in the World Cup. But this is my personal opinion. I was given out two times when I was not out and in such a situation could have gone in for a referral that would have helped me continue to bat.”Sehwag’s stand is in contrast to that of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) and most of India’s top players, including MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, while Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan are for its implementation. India were part of the first trial of the system during their tour of Sri Lanka in 2008. They struggled with their referrals, getting only one of them right, while Sri Lanka successfully challenged 11 decisions.Since then, the BCCI have ensured that India have not had to face the system in their series against South Africa, Sri Lanka and Australia. The upcoming Test series against New Zealand will also not feature it, while the ICC has asked the India and South Africa boards to decide on its implementation for the South Africa tour. Plans are afoot for the UDRS’ one-day debut during the World Cup.Sehwag’s next assignment is the home series against New Zealand, followed by the tour of South Africa in December. He was keen to play all the matches in the New Zealand series, though he is ready to go early to South Africa if the BCCI decides to send some of the senior players before the end of the one-day leg of the New Zealand series. “We would like to play a full team against New Zealand but the schedule is such that a break may be needed,” Sehwag said. “It’s up to the team management and the BCCI to decide on the matter. I would like to play as many ODIs as I can. But if the team management and the BCCI want us to go early to South Africa we will do it.”

Celtic must unleash Kyogo Furuhashi

Celtic will be looking to continue their march towards the domestic treble this season as they play in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup today.

The Hoops face off against their arch-rivals in the clash at Hampden this afternoon as they compete for a place in the final of the competition.

Ange Postecoglou’s men have already secured the League Cup trophy this season and are currently six points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Their lead over Rangers in the league has put them in a terrific position to reclaim the title and they can now pile the misery on them with a win in this latest Old Firm matchup.

One change will be enforced upon the Australian head coach for this match as Gio Giakoumakis has been ruled out through injury.

This leaves a spot at the top end of the pitch and Kyogo Furuhashi must be unleashed from the start to take the Greek international’s place.

Ahead of the match, John Hartson has backed the forward to start: “I think he’ll be dying to get back on the scoresheet.

“He’s such an enthusiastic and quality player. What an impact he made before he got injured.”

This is not the first time the ex-Hoops striker has praised the Japan international, as he previously said:

“There is no doubt Celtic have landed someone quite special in Kyogo. His movement is outstanding.

“It was a pity he couldn’t get more involved against Rangers, but when he moved into the central role, he was an absolute menace to their defence.”

Postecoglou must heed his advice and start the centre-forward as he proved earlier in the season that he has a keen eye for goal. He has found the back of the net 16 times in 27 matches for the club in all competitions, including eight goals in 12 cup matches in the Europa League and League Cup.

Kyogo has also delivered 1.1 key passes per game and created four ‘big chances’ in the Premiership, which shows that he is able to link up the play and create openings for his teammates as well as scoring the goals.

This shows that he has the quality to be the difference-maker in this Old Firm clash. He has the ability to score goals at this level and will be able to punish Rangers if the Celtic midfield are able to provide him with the service he needs to do his damage in the final third.

AND in other news, Huge blow: Celtic dealt late Rangers injury setback, Ange Postecoglou will be fuming…
